(9 May 2023) A handful of recent horror films, including “Beau is Afraid” and “Evil Dead Rise,” exploit the psychological terrors that can come from having a complicated relationship with one’s mother. Adam Lowenstein, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh who specializes in horror, said it is a genre well-suited for grappling with these kinds of cerebral issues. (May 9)
